Summary: Underrepresented Groups in Science
In 1960 in the United States, there were 6 percent or 7 percent women working in all science and engineering.57 In 2015, there were about 30 percent women working in all science and engineering.58 That is a lot of change in about fifty years. There has been positive change as well for racial/ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, and persons with disabilities. Still, there are many for whom the possibilities of their lives were not realized:
who were told in high school that people like them could not be scientists,
who got discouraged in college and graduate school,
who could not find a job, or who took a low-level job and never escaped,
who worked for free in the laboratories of others,
who taught as adjunct instructors all their lives,
who could not get adequate child care and did not get tenure,
who never got to be chair or dean or department head or division director,
who never won a prize or chaired a conference,
who were harassed for being gay or transgendered,
who could not get accommodations for their disabilities.
